New Piece

Finally got it scanned. Can't think of a name that I like yet though, so for now it's just "new piece". It'll come eventually.

Break

Been a while since I updated, I've been enjoying being atrociously lazy as a result of winter break. I have done a painting since I've been out of school, and I'm hoping to scan it within the next few days to post it on here. I did it all in one day or else I would have posted some progress shots!

But anywho, here is the black and white version of the Lynch piece:

This is in charcoal and graphite, and it was the completed version before I started adding the acrylic paint. Honestly, after I had completed this portion of it I almost wanted to leave it this way. I'm totally in love with the way it looks and I'm really glad I scanned it before I painted it so I can have this version stand on it's own. I think I'm still partial to it as opposed to the colored one, but I haven't completely made up my mind.

More stuff hopefully coming soon!

Official Shoes Picture

So on Saturday my awesome professor Megan Berkheiser (who has amazing work, check her out) offered to take studio photos of anyone's work if they brought it in, so I brought in my shoes since I didn't have a real picture of them yet. Here it is! I wish she had gotten some up close detail shots, but oh well, I can probably do those myself at home. Once I find my camera charger, of course.

Cue the circus music...

Here are four of my circus themed character designs that I finished today (taken in horrible quality on my cell phone - I really need to find my camera charger...) but I'm pretty pleased with them so far. Just have to finish up the other four and I'll be done with intro! hell yes.

Here's my color study for the Lynch piece. I'm really wanting to try something new, and not do actual skin tones, so that's what this is about. Who knows if it'll actually turn out this way though, I might lose my nerve once I start to put it down.

And here's what I've got so far.....it's going to be a looooong weekend.

Oh and...

I forgot to mention that my Died Young Stayed Pretty poster for Intro made it into the display case in Morris Hall. First time I've ever had anything displayed in the hallways there, so that made me pretty happy :)

David Lynch!

Well here's the black and white sketch I was talking about. Looks a bit wonky but hey, that's why it's a sketch. The people on his shoulders will be a lot more detailed in the final of course, it was difficult to even think about on such a small scale and with charcoal....I'm really excited to do this though. Love me some Lynch!

Tis the season for woe and stress

Well, it's that time of the quarter again. Finals. In intro we're doing 8 character designs based on a circus/sideshow theme. I had some serious trouble with it at first, I was definitely overthinking it. But I think I finally have them figured out now. Got 7/8 penciled, hopefully my professor thinks they're okay. Painting them is going to be another story....hopefully I don't screw it up trying to be adventurous. Oh, and let me tell you how fun it was cutting eight 8.5 x 11 pieces of illustration board of out two 20x 30 sheets............

for my final in mat/tech we're doing rolling stone review section, so basically it's a celebrity portrait. I (predictably) chose David Lynch with the members of Sparklehorse. I have to do the black and white comp for it tomorrow night, so I'll probably take a picture of it then.

Just finished....

with interviewing Eric Fortune! He was so nice, and I was reallyyyy nervous so I'm glad he wasn't mean, haha. It was weird talking to someone who makes such incredible art, like it's their everday thing....making beautifully perfect pieces that students like me aspire to get to some day.

check out his stuff! you won't be sorry.

So close..

Well today I ended up blowing through the other shoe pretty quickly, hence no in-process pictures.....I'm fairly pleased with how they came out, for it being my first time with acrylics. and they're on shoes. of course there's always more to do on them......like all the little white bits in the nooks and crannies that are near impossible to get to with a paint brush. also considering adding more trees to the tongues of the shoes, but I can't decide if that would be overkill. Ah, well. I am excited to use acrylic on paper and see how that goes. At least I know it'd be easier than this!

Shoe update

worked on the shoes yesterday, nearly finished one. although I'm realizing that the edge of the part where the laces go is looking a bit rough, so I want to try to smooth that out. and I think I'm going to make the white border/rubber bit on the bottom a black-ish orange and pick/add a pattern in the iridescent copper paint I bought. gah and I still have a whole other shoe to do before tuesday!

In progress...

We're painting on shoes in my materials and techniques class. It's the first time I've ever used acrylics, so I'm a bit intimidated. I'm liking the way they look so far, but it's in the beginning stages so there's always time for things to go wrong.

here's what they look like now:

(sorry for the crappy photobooth pic, I can't find my camera charger!)

I'm going to keep running with this 'demon woman in the woods' thing until it wears out, because it's really the only thing inspiring me lately so I'll take that as a sign that I need to keep doing it until it's out of my system. we'll see where it goes!

Recent Pieces

Recently I received an e-mail from the SCAD Illustration department saying they'd like me to submit up to 8 pieces of my best work from the past year so that they could submit them to upcoming illustration competitions. I'm so flattered, and excited! I only submitted six pieces, because there's no way I have 8 quality pieces to send to them. These are the pieces I gave them....I feel like this is the year where my art is really coming together, though, because I'm really happy with everything I've done so far this year. Definitely a good start I think!
